There is a direct link between Mahatma Gandhi’s satyagraha campaigns  for justice in South Africa and India, and  the civil disobedience campaigns of the modern Civil Rights movement spearheaded by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.. Going back to the 1920s Gandhi’s tactics were studied in the United States and throughout the world.  The nonviolent resistance tactics that epitomized the modern civil rights movement were strongly influenced by the satyagraha campaigns. They were spearheaded by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., but  were driven by many others, some of whom knew both Gandhi and King personally.
